Effective Resumes And Your Job Search

Straight Talk and Facts About Resumes 

A traditional dictionary definition of a resume is:  A brief account of personal, educational and professional qualifications and experience, as of an applicant for a job. (The Random House College Dictionary – Revised Edition)

Contrast this with Lederman & Associates, Inc.’s real world definition of a resume:

Now, before you read any further, take a moment and think about the following statements:

  • My current personal occupation is personal salesperson

  • I need an “effective marketing tool” to be successful in my personal sales career

So what does that have to do with me you say - I am not in sales, I am a (fill in your job title).  That is true in a certain sense; however, in order to be successful in your job search, you must view the search as a job itself.

Think about it.  If you are looking for a new job, you are trying to sell yourself to another company.  You are in personal sales - a career in addition to your chosen profession.  And to be successful in your personal sales career, you need to effectively market your product – you.

And it takes effective marketing tools to be successful in a sales career, especially personal sales.

  • Many resumes are screened-out by computers without ever being seen by a person

  • Resumes that are read by a person are usually given 5-15 seconds initial review

Think about that.  If your resume even gets by the computer-screens, it has 5-15 seconds to sell you to the company.  And even if your resume gets through one individual’s screen, it might not get through others.

Therefore, it must be effectively written so that it sells itself to every entity (computer or human) that reads it.
